Tigers, Terps split as D crumbles

Posted by cuorange on May 3, 2009

Clemson (32-16, 16-11) missed a golden opportunity to sweep a three game series from Maryland (21-26, 7-20) on Sunday as the Tigers blew a 5-2 lead and gave up 3 unearned runs in an 8-6 loss.

The Tigers outhit the Terps 15 to 11, but left 17 runners stranded and committed four errors.  Thomas Cruz (2-2) gave up 2 runs in the top of 9th and was tagged with the loss.

In the first game the Tigers rode home runs by Jeff Schaus and Ben Paulsen and the relief pitching of of Scott Weismann (1-0) and Matt Vaughn (S,3) to 7-4 victory.

This was a series Clemson should have swept.  Defense, which has bitten the Tigers from time to time this year, cost the Tigers a chance at the sweep and the Tigers find themselves 2.5 games behind Florida State with one conference series left to play.
