Only in the ACC

Posted by cuorange on May 19, 2009

So, this thing they call the ACC baseball tournament is cranking up on Wednesday in Durham, NC.  If all goes according to plan Georgia Tech, Boston College, Miami and Florida State will have all played two games before Clemson and Virginia square off on Thursday evening.  Why you ask?  It seems as though the ACC is can’t contain itself with the excitement over a Duke-North Carolina match up so they switched the games around to make sure that happened in the evening game of opening day.

This would be fine if this were basketball (where they wouldn’t shuffle the schedules no matter the match up) and we got to see the Heels and Devils battle on the court in a classic rivalry.  But this is baseball.  You toss out a matchup of two top 15 teams in Clemson and Virginia for that noted college baseball rivalry of UNC – Duke?

What this means of course is that Clemson and Virginina get their off day before they begin play.  Every other team gets one day off after play begins and has one day without a scheduled game and therefore has an opportunity to set up their pitching or perhaps rest an injured player.  Not Clemson or Virginia.

I understand the need to put fans in the stands in college baseball.  But if the ACC is so worried about gathering a few extra hundred paying fans maybe the tournament should be somewhere else, like oh I don’t know Tallahassee or Greenville, SC.

So much for the integrity of the regular season.  Very Bush League of Swofford and the ACC.  Exactly what I’ve come to expect from a guy who wears his Tar Heel colors inside and out.
