Finding a champion – Part 2 (Defense)

Posted by cuorange on July 1, 2009

In Part 1 of Finding a champion we wrote about the offense of the most recent BCS Champions.  There’s a lot more green on this chart than there was on the offensive chart.  Scoring defense and total defense of the champions have been in the top 10 in 8 of the 9 years. Five times in those 9 years the champion’s scoring defense were ranked in the top 5.

Year Team Total Defense Rushing Defense Passing Defense Scoring Defense
2000 Oklahoma 8 23 9 7
2001 Miami 6 40 2 1
2002 Ohio St 23 3 95 2
2003 LSU 1 3 18 1
2004 USC 6 1 34 3
2005 Texas 10 33 8 8
2006 Florida 6 5 33 6
2007 LSU 3 12 9 17
2008 Florida 9 15 20 4

Simply put, your team needs to be in the top 10 in scoring defense and total defense most years to be a national title contender.
