Making the right call at the right time

Dabo Swinney

Dabo Swinney

By putting an end to the quarterback drama (at least for now) yesterday Dabo Swinney made the right call at the right time.  By all accounts Kyle Parker had earned the job and despite the belief that leaving the position in limbo for another week or two would lead to increased competition and make both Parker and Willy Korn better in the long term, it was time to name a starter.

I have read that the team was somewhat divided on who the starter should be.  By naming a starter nearly three weeks prior to game one Swinney has, for all intents and purposes, ended that debate while allowing Parker almost three weeks to get as comfortable as possible (without having played a game) as leader of the team and have the team get used to him as the leader.  From this point forward Parker will get the #1 reps in practice.

Korn will play.  Whether that’s for one series, or two or five, no one knows.  Whether Parker holds the job all season long, no one knows.  The only thing anyone knows is that Parker will run out on the field on September 5 as Clemson’s starting quarterback.

It’s a long season and there will be many bumps in the road.  Fans love the 2nd string quarterback when things go bad.  When the #2 quarterback is Willy Korn, Clemson fans love him even more.
